‘Rags to Ostriches’ 24ct gold (2020)

This piece is an original blown Ostrich egg, covered in 24ct gold leaf and freehand illustrated. A jovial take on the term 'Rags to riches' referring to any situation in which a person rises from poverty to wealth, and in some cases from absolute obscurity to heights of fame—sometimes instantly. This is a common archetype in literature and popular culture. Basically turning an otherwise invaluable and unassuming object in to something of value and true beauty, symbolising wealth, abundance and fertility.

The image here shows the South African Ostrich egg with it’s uniquely porcelain complexion and touch, adorned with Tom’s signature illustrations and gold leaf this really is a cracking bi-product. Inspired by the golden goose eggs from Roald Dahl's 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it’s fun, fancy and fabulous.
