Introducing "Lucky"- A stunning large-scale photograph on canvas print that captures the essence of an antique galloper, a quintessential fairground icon traditionally carved in a dynamic galloping pose. These exquisite wooden sculptures were a staple of merry-go-rounds, designed to delight children with their enchanting presence.
During the 1800s and early 1900s, the fairground was a magical realm of cutting-edge technology and joy, with the galloper at its heart. Tom named this piece “Lucky” after sourcing it from an antiques dealer in Shropshire, England, where it was discovered in a dilapidated state, having clearly seen better days. Yet, he recognised the hidden beauty locked away in that old barn and felt compelled to give it a new lease on life.
The restoration process became a year-long journey filled with imagination and nostalgia, as Tom pondered the galloper's history—where it had been and who had ridden it. Growing up in Southport, one of the UK’s most famous Victorian seaside towns, he was no stranger to the sight of carousels, making this endeavour deeply personal. The restoration was not just about bringing back its former glory; it was a labour of love, culminating in months of freehand illustration directly on the surface.
Tom worked tirelessly, often on the floor, tackling angles with patience and determination. After over 12 months of hard work, he formed a strong connection with the piece—not quite romantically, but with a profound appreciation for the journey it represented. Feeling “Lucky” to have found it, he embraced the opportunity to rescue and revive this piece of history.
"Lucky" encapsulates the joy and energy that come from decades of interaction—the original sculptor’s craftsmanship, the laughter of children who once rode it, and now, the new generation of art lovers who will once again experience its luxurious hand-me-down charm. This large-scale print invites viewers to appreciate not just the beauty of the galloper but the rich tapestry of emotions and stories woven into its existence.
