Bring a touch of whimsy and a story of adventure to your wall with "Oh Deer! What Happened to Frederick?" This captivating photograph print features an original deer skull sourced from Kent, often celebrated as ‘The Garden of England.’ This piece holds deep personal significance, stemming from a memorable visit to a friend’s charming home that once served as the Bishop’s residence.
During my exploration of this enchanting estate, I was greeted by a vibrant landscape filled with wild peacocks, playful dragonflies, and an array of animals, including dogs, cats, and even Chinese running ducks. The delightful energy of three little girls, each with their own adventurous spirit, added to the charm as they guided me through the grounds.
On a sunny afternoon, we ventured into the woodland, where majestic deer roamed, their impressive antlers creating a striking sight. In a magical glade that felt like a scene from a fairy tale, the girls played until the atmosphere took a playful turn reminiscent of “The Blair Witch Project.”
It was in this enchanting setting that I stumbled upon a deer skull among the dried leaves, embellished with large branches as makeshift antlers by the imaginative children. A vibrant purple ‘F’ chalked onto the skull led to its whimsical name: Frederick.
Intrigued by the beauty of this unique find, I expressed my interest in any skulls or antlers that might become available, and to my delight, my friend offered me this special piece. As I discreetly tucked Frederick away, one of the toddlers noticed his absence and sweetly asked, “What happened to Frederick?” This charming inquiry solidified the name and the essence of the piece.
The journey back to my studio in Manchester was filled with a mix of excitement and awareness as I carried this intriguing animal head in my bag. Once home, I meticulously cleaned, boiled, and bleached Frederick before preparing him for illustration.
This piece embodies a delightful blend of macabre and playfulness, representing not only a work of art but also a cherished memory from a whimsical day spent in a vibrant environment. "Oh Deer! What Happened to Frederick?" is a celebration of life, adventure, and the unexpected beauty found in our surroundings. Hang this photograph print in your space and let it inspire conversations and reflections on the stories that shape our lives.
